Why Andrew Yang’s Democratic Debate Closing Statement Was A Mic Drop Performance
Towards the end of the fifth Democratic Presidential Debate, I was tempted to turn off the television and skip the boring closing statements – then I heard Andrew Yang. For me, his closing statement was anything but predictable and boring. It was actually refreshing and riveting. Ranked dead last for debate talk time (only 6:53 minutes), his 1:47 minute closing statement represented more than 25% of his overall debate air time, and he used it well!
As a professional speaker, I couldn’t help reflecting on his performance through that lens. Connecting with an audience is a universally critical skill for virtually all leaders, and I’d just watched Andrew Yang give a masterclass to some of the nation’s best and brightest political veterans. Admittedly, Yang may not be the most sophisticated, eloquent orator by some standards, but his presentation style arguably may be the most effective with real mass audiences. Let’s examine five lessons that can be extracted from Yang’s somewhat unconventional presentation style.
Lesson #1 – Emphasize points of commonality to build rapport and connection
The first two sentences of his closing statement immediately started establishing rapport and connection. “I’m here with my wife Evelyn tonight. We have two young boys, Christopher and Damien.” I’ve only heard Yang speak a handful of times, but I’ve heard him mention more than once that his wife cares for their two sons, one of whom is autistic and has special needs. I’m sure that’s not an accident. Leading with the most relatable elements of his bio is so smart. It not only helps him introduce himself to an electorate that barely knows him, but it also sparks a real sense of connection with the audience. While others may come across as disconnected wealthy politicians, this type of personable introduction paints him as more of a regular family man trying to navigate real life problems, and audience members are more likely to connect to that.
In contrast, during the debate Senator Cory Booker vigorously interjected at one point to remind the audience that he was the other Rhodes scholar mayor on the stage (in addition to Pete Buttigieg). The reported 450% Google search spike on the question “What is a Rhodes scholar?” just reinforces how far removed the average American voter is from Rhodes scholar circles. Obviously, virtually everyone on the presidential debate stage has an academic/intellectual pedigree that would evoke the highest levels of admiration (if not intimidation), so it seems counterproductive at best for candidates to use precious debate time to point out how much more educated they are than the average voter. Indeed, Yang is so smart to selectively focus on elements of his biography that mirror voters’ experiences and struggles. This creates authentic connection.
Lesson #2 – Engage with, don’t just talk to the audience
In the next two sentences of Yang’s closing comment, he directly engaged the audience. With his hand raised he asked, “How many of you all are parents like us, here in the room? So if you’re a parent, you’ve had this thought. Maybe you’ve been afraid to express it, and it is this: our kids are not alright.”
That opener completely drew me in. As a parent, I felt an emotional connection to his point, and the initial question created a bit of suspense that almost forced me to listen. I can’t think of a much more difficult presentation challenge than figuring out how to engender audience engagement during a crowded presidential debate field as a lesser known candidate at 11:30 pm., but that technique of asking a direct question that the audience could relate to with a compelling emotional answer was a stroke of genius.
In the July Democratic Presidential Debate, he similarly started his closing statement with an intriguing question and answer.
“Do you know what the talking heads couldn’t stop talking about after the last debate? It’s not that I’m somehow number four on this stage in national polling. It was the fact that I wasn’t wearing a tie!”
With this question and provocative answer, he similarly created a bit of intrigue that naturally draws the audience in. Furthermore, his reference to not wearing a tie again made his seem more relatable - more like them. The simple truth is that you can’t have impact with a group if you don’t have their attention, and using these types of authentically intriguing questions is such an adept technique for engaging a group.
Lesson #3 – Don’t talk above the audience.
As a strategy consultant with a top firm, I was taught to quickly assess my client’s culture and then dress a half step above the client. Our executives told us that since we were billing them thousands of dollars an hour for our team’s time, anyone should be able to immediately identify the consultants in the room, but at the same time they wanted us to blend into the corporate culture and not unwittingly separate ourselves from clients by dressing too formally. Similarly, there’s a reason why many newspapers reportedly write for a late middle to early high school reading level. It simply isn’t effective to talk above people. Unfortunately, too many highly educated policy wonks are oblivious that their well intended salient points are flying right over their audience’s heads. This doesn’t mean that presenters should dumb down their presentations, but instead they should be conscious of their audience and make every attempt to speak with a parlance, vocabulary and style that audiences will actually hear and understand.
After George W. Bush was elected, many pundits boiled down his appeal to a single word relatability – particularly his plain spoken (sometimes grammatically challenged) style. Indeed, they suggested that voters didn’t necessarily gravitate to the most intellectual person in the room nearly as much as the guy/gal they felt they could enjoy a beer with. Similarly, Yang used plain language style and content to speak directly to voters, and whether the audience agreed with his points or not, his delivery was undeniably easy to understand and digest.
Lesson #4 – Remember, it’s not about you. It’s about them.
Unfortunately, a politician’s DNA too often oozes self aggrandizement (sometimes sprinkled with a hint of narcissism), and that predisposition often encourages them to talk about themselves incessantly, but Yang seems to do the exact opposite. He tends to focus primarily on anticipated needs/issues faced by the audience members and to a lesser extent the most voter relatable facts about himself.
Indeed, part of Yang’s cleverness in my opinion is not leading with his accolades and achievements. While Booker forcefully reminds us that he’s a Rhodes scholar, Yang’s approach is quite the opposite. Ironically, because he doesn’t share his bio as much, it creates a sense of organic curiosity. After his intriguing closing comments, I actually Googled him for the first time (at 11:45 p.m.) and was surprised to learn that he graduated Columbia Law in 1999, was selected by the Obama administration as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, and authored two books. These facts surprised me not because they were out of the norm for a presidential candidate but simply because I’d never heard him mention any of them in the handful of appearances where I’d heard him speak. Instead of leading with his resume as so many politicians do, Yang seems to focus almost entirely on articulating relatable problems and proposing easy to understand solutions.
In a world where solutions can seem terribly complex and hard to explain (think healthcare plan options), Yang seems to artfully use his limited time to articulate easy to understand voter focused solutions. With barely more than a minute of time to offer an opening statement during a previous Democratic Presidential Debate, he announced a giveaway focused around one of his campaign’s key proposed solutions - the $1,000/month freedom dividend. Putting the efficacy of the policy idea aside, the giveaway announcement certainly was attention grabbing and voter focused. Many leaders can’t resist the urge to begin these type opening comments with a focus on themselves, their background, their experience, their superior skills and eventually meander towards something of value to the listener. With Yang, he invariably maintains a voter focused perspective which is not just refreshing but seemingly effective as well.
Lesson #5 – Be funny.
Hands down – the funniest moment of the entire debate for me was when Yang explained his initial attempt to address broad societal problems. He explained, “My first move was not to run for President of the United States because I am not insane.” Not surprisingly, the line evoked spontaneous laughter.
It’s easy to understand how humor can transform a dry presentation into an enjoyable, meaningful experience for the audience. Humor doesn’t have to come packaged as a joke, and you don’t have to be a comedian to be funny. The best humor is often packaged as daily life observations that others can relate to. (Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld come to mind as masters in this space.) Again, relatability is so key. No, you don’t have to be a Rock or Seinfeld to be funny. So often, if you’re just honest, insightful and push beyond what others are willing to say, the humor will come.
I’m no political pundit or debate expert, but I considered Yang’s closing statement during the most recent Democratic Presidential Debate the most engaging and compelling for a broad, diverse audience. While Booker and Buttigieg are rightly praised for their masterful debate skills and sophisticated, eloquent speaking style, Yang seems to have an ability to speak in a way that creates real engagement, interest and connection. In my opinion, ultimately that’s what the most effective speakers do. Yang’s style may be far from perfect, but his performance reminds us that authentic relatability beats sophisticated perfection any day.
